When I worked at printroom.com, we had a lot of complaints from customers who ordered 8x10s and wondered why the tops of their heads were being cut off. So, either the photographer had to leave extra room for cropping or upload a separate image for the 4:5 aspect ratio prints.

There is one more alternative we offered at printroom and that was the White Border option, where the entire image is printed on the 8x10, but at the 2:3 aspect ratio, which puts a thick white border above and below the image. It was like watching a widescreen movie on an old TV that had the black bands above and below the picture. Although no one really wants the thick white border, some customers would rather have the whole image and were willing to put up with the white border to get it. To explain it to them, I told them it was trying to fit a rectangle (the original 2:3 image) into a square (8x10 is almost square). To fit it, we either have to chop off the ends or shrink it down so it fits.

Yes, I don't understand why it's so hard to buy 8x12 frames either. I hate 8x10s now.

Yes, but you don't see every Tom, Dick, and Harry using them...

Just curious (or maybe I missed it in another thread), but would you mind posting the image in question?

No you didn't miss it. I was planning to but haven't gotten a chance. I will post the original and the cropped in 8x10 size.

Sorry but what do you mean? Is the 4:5 ratio only available in high-end cameras or certain brands or something?

Those ratios are a relic from when pros shot on medium and large format film. The staple of many studios was the RB-67. Hassleblad users just printed square so they don't count

When I owned a lab we offered 8x12 and what we called a full frame 8x10. Like was stated previously it had a white border.

Another thing we offered was a mat that fit the 8x12 into an 11x14 frame. We sold a boatload of those.

I think the frame makers have not changed because the public has not. 8x10 is still considered the standard for a print size. Until photographers stop offering it as size option it will stay with us.

Just so no to cropping

Interesting how 2 worlds interacting with each other but still one is ever changing while other is relatively not.

At least am happy to hear that offering 8x12 is not a crime

On a side note, my client replied saying she was fine with the free upgrade YuuuuuHoooooooooo!!!!!

Yesterday I delivered the photos to my client and she was very please with them. I might also get to do a session for her Christmas cards. Crossing fingers

Did you crop any from the original before you changed the aspect ratio? The original looked a little odd to me, so I measured it, and came up with roughly 4" X 6.5". That might explain why you were having some issues. That is a ratio of 2:3.25, which is not a standard format of any camera I know of?

Someone correct me if I am wrong....

Here's what I did. Opened the original in PS and clicked on the crop tool. Dimensions for crop tool were width: 8in and height: 10in. Dragged the crop tool over the photo and composed to fit the maximum length.

I did not crop anything from the original but my Nikon D40 has a max resolution of 3008x2000, which is why you got 4"x6.5" probably. However, I don't think that would be an issue since I had more area to crop.

Did I miss something or did I do something wrong? Is there a better way of cropping?
