Default How to photograph people playing board games

How would i photograph people playing board games?
are there any techniques?
should i use a flash?
should i use a 50-250mm lens or 25-50 mm lens?
i have a canon rebel xsi.

I would avoid flash pictures cause it will make things look flat. Also, i would not try to put everything in the photo but focus on some details (but I'm not a pro ). Maybe try to give some depth or have part of the scene unfocus.

I like to shoot that kind of scenes with high aperture. Here is a picture of people playing chinese chess I took in Beijing last month :
