Default B/W processing

bw-1

Exif

Canon EOS REBEL T3i
Aperture f/11
Exposure 1/250s
ISO Speed 100
Focal Length 35 mm
Lens 17-40

This is one of my first B/W and i did a very quick edit on Lightroom, but whenever i tried to get more contrast the foreground (people) got too dark.

If you have a suggestion about another aspect of the photo feel free to educate me .

It's actually a really sweet shot as far as I'm concerned, and I often do this by design (misfocus purposefully on the subject)...don't forget to straighten the horizontal lines though.

The conversion isn't ideal to be honest..it feels pretty muddy and you have a lot of greys and shadows. I pulled the version you have on flickr, and pushed the fill a little... it brought it up fairly well, and the resultant noise wasn't unpleasant, and you didnt lose the sky.

Just remember when you add contrast, you're going to not only blacken blacks and whiten whites, but you're going to lose details, which isn't a good... it's better to lose a little in the background to maintain a decent exposure on the subjects, even if the focus isn't traditional.

Thanks for your answer. Yes i know the conversion is weak, the couple is my sister and her boyfriend and it's from our trip to australia (the sidney opera is right behind this) and i thought this might look better in B/W than colour, but after converting it to greyscale i had little idea how to continue.

I wasn't considering the loss of detail from adding contrast, thanks for pointing that out. And how much did you pushed the fill light?

Sorry man, I can't remember off the top of my head, though it was a good lick, I remember that... besides, what I could do working on your small flickr upload is different to what would get working on the original file.

Dear Niresangwa,

I don't understand this technique, and its application. Would you mind explaining about this technique and when it is applied?

Thanks
