I am very much a beginner and am trying to learn how to best convert to B&W. I followed a tutorial posted here and converted this using PSE. How is the conversion? What could I do differently to make it stand out more? Critiques on composition, exposure, etc. would also be appreciated.

Thank you so much,
Deb

Hello dje158,

I think you did a pretty good job! Congrats! For the B&W conversion I think it's good. The only thing it’s his t-shirt! The white it's too bright, but it's only my novice opinion. About composition I like the way he natural poses and smiles. What distracts me a little is the rail in diagonal.

Regards!

I think your black and white is perfect. It looks great to me. I don't think the shirt is too bright... but I just like bright pictures hehe

Thank you both for taking the time to look and comment. I appreciate your help. I had not even noticed the diagonal rail until you pointed it out and now it sticks out like a sore thumb to me. I need to remember to pay more attention to the small details. He was not very cooperative and this was taken when we were basically done (refelctor packed up, etc). He just sat down on the rail (finally still!!) and I started asking him about his recent bday.

Thanks again,
Deb

Tell me about getting little guys to cooperate! Considering the fact that he's a little boy, this turned out really nice. Glad you got him to sit still for a small fraction of a second :-) I have four little brothers
