Default are film and digital slr lenses interchangeable

Are lenses interchangeable between a film and digital slr camera as long as they are the same brand?

In general, lenses are interchangeable between cameras if they have the same mount. For example, Canon EF-S and FD lenses don't work with Canon EF mount cameras.

What LoveDSLR said, with the caveat that depending on the lens/body combination, some features on each may not work. i.e. if you have a manufal focus lens on an autofocus body, you won't have autofocus.

Also note that a crop-sensor lens (Canon EF-S or Nikon's DX) wont work fully on film SLRs.

It's usually ok to use your film SLR lenses on digital SLR bodies(as long as you don't mind manually focusing and metering), but it is inadvisable to use Dslr lenses on SLR bodies.Ken

That depends entirely on the lens/body combination at hand and what you would consider a DSLR

If you want to get technical, the Nikon 24-70 was created with digital in mind. I then consider it a DSLR lens. However, using it on any recent film SLR is perfectly fine. Works perfectly. Even some of the later film bodies kept VR!

It's more a question of not damaging the electronic couplings of dslr lenses- also,I would never try to use a dslr lens on my Nikon FE, because dslr lenses could damage the SLR's mirror, for example. Mind you, without an aperture ring,( I have the gelded "G" lenses)-it would be a waste of time. My Nikon E-series 50mm f 1.8 SLR lens and my E series 36-72 f3.5 lens, I can use on either camera,I just need to manually expose and focus,( on DSLR) which I have spent a good few years doing anyway.Ken

How do you figure? I use a Nikon 50mm f/1.8D on my FE with no problems with either the body or lens. I'll agree, using G lenses on an FE would be somewhat pointless (though entirely possible), btu that's why I said that it's mostly possible. Which Nikon DSLR lenses can damage the mirror? I think youre confusing DX with EF-S.

You're not convincing me much. DX lenses work on FX and on film. It's EF-S lenses that cant be mounted to EF digital or EF film.
