Default Step-down filter rings - Disadvantages?

Was wandering if anyone could enlighten me on the disadvantages (if any) on using step-down filter rings. I'm currently looking at the tamron and sigma 18-200mm lenses which use filter threads of 62 and 72mm respectively. However, i've got a 52mm circular polariser that i'd want to use, so is a step-down ring a good idea or should i go for a 55-200mm lens with a 52mm filter thread?

You never want to step down to the filter size. It won't cover the entire lens area. You can step up to the filter size though. Putting a 77mm filter on a 62 or 72mm lens would be okay. It would cover the entire area of the lens. The only problem you would run into is not being able to use a lens hood.

Not quite: with certain lenses (namely macros) you can usually step-down a filter size or two, and with telephoto lenses you can sometimes do the same.

I wouldn't advise it though: it's always best to get one filter in the largest size you'll need and get step-UP rings for all your other lenses.

Not happy that i've spent good money on a 52 now!! Thought i'd be sticking with the nikon standard threads but i've only just discovered the affordable tamron and sigma 18-200mm and am now considering one of these over the 55-200 vr. Anyone know if there are any articles on step-down filters and examples of their effects on images? Im struggling to find any.

Take a piece of cardboard and cut a hole (say 1 1/4 inch in diameter) in the center. Hold that over the front of your current lens and shoot some shots. You can then observe for yourself the issues.

like your thinking, i'll give it a go on my 18-55 as i guess thats gonna be the range that is gonna get hurt by a step-down filter.

Thanks!

Shoot stopped down for most dramatic results. Most noticeable the wider but will effect superlongs

We used to shoot cutouts of different shapes in the old days to achieve certain effects.
