I have a D700 and still use the D40 sometimes.

My 11 year old daughter used it the other day. Never used a DSLR before and I just handed it to her. She managed to get good pics out of it whilst she was using it for a couple of hours with no help.

The D40 is a great concept but wish it had some of the things that were removed. (Like the AF motor).

i dont see much hate other than the fact it has no AF in camera and the fact its older....
it is usually prefered over the D40x actually due to noise and what not.
I loved mine and wish I had kept it.

So we start with the D700, lets get the price down to <£400

OK so lets remove the top LCD and AF motor because they add bulk and expense.

Change some of the dials around and provide an Auto function.

Now lets remove some of the buttons and chuck them into the menu.

All that weather proofing case isn't probably needed so lets ditch that.

The screen is rather expensive and large so lets reduce the size.

Those buying it will want to use it straight away so lets include a DX 18-55 lens as they are about the cheapest lens Nikon has.

And its rather costly to produce those FX sensors and if we are supplying a DX lens it will only work at 5MP ish anyway, so we will have to put a APC sized sensor in there.

There we have it, we could call it the eerrmm D40.

So the D40 is just a cut down version of the D700

wow...thanks...I have read the nikon d40 x manual backwards and forwards (well, maybe i missed a page here and there) but I find the things I read do not always make sense to me...I went back to the book and you were right about moving the focus point with the multi selector. Thanks again...dame

I guess my main reason is that (without an adaptor) my Canon lenses won't work that well

lol!!!!!!

the thing is the D40 is an exceptional camera. it does what it is supposed to do!

it's my opinion, the D40 blows the XT out of the water as far as noise goes.

remember, apples to apples.....don't be comparing the D40 nor the XT to any other camera not in their class. I had a D40 and needed other bells and whistles for classes i'm taking. i was broke and had to use the trade in money from the D40 to buy my D80, something i will ALWAYS regret!

i would challange anyone to throw a D40 and a D80 on manual and compare the exposures.....though you're comparing apples to oranges, i doubt you'd see a huge difference.

it all comes down to who is pressing that shutter release.

as far as video capture on the D90, i really couldn't care less. what i do like about that camera is the sensor cleaning (something Nikon should of done from the D40x and up) and the CMOS sensor.

someone mentioned about the top LCD screen missing. that is one thing i love about my D80. it makes life easier to have to go into the main menu to change things like white balance. i also like the 2 command wheels.

one last thought. there is a major movement by fine art photographers using homemade pinhole cameras. i know of one that converted a trailor into one. there's no AF and only one focal point, go figure.
