Question New Rebel XS...problem with the flash?

It just seems different than my XT and I'm not sure I like it...for one, the strobe lighting in low light situations...is there a way to turn it off? (just the strobe, not the flash for the picture). It seems no matter where I go in my house it goes off and it never did that with my XT! Another thing that's different is my pictures seem to be blown out more often, like the power of the flash is stronger or something. I'm no pro and my photos don't always turn out awesome, but it just seems like they aren't as good (besides less noise) as the ones from my XT.

Maybe subconsciously I'm trying to find a reason to return it and just pay the $350 to get my XT fixed instead.

The XS uses the flash in darker conditions to light up the scene to help with AF: most cameras use a dedicated light for this, but the XS strobes the flash. There should be something in the menu about it.

Blown out photo is due to over exposure. I hope you are not shooting at high ISO. If you are, check your manual to learn to change it.Try shots with different ISOs to know the level that doesnt lead to a blown out photo. Also you can put your camera on a bit higher level of auto mode.
I hope this could be of help.

You can turn off the AF-assist flash firing under Custom Functions, it is option 6. Set that to Disable to stop the strobe light effect.

Did you check to see if you've got FEC (flash exposure compensation) dialed in on the body? You may also want to try switching your eTTL II mode from Evaluative to Average to see if that helps.

Not sure what you mean by "strobe" lighting. The e-TTL preflash is required to set the flash power, and that's just what the XT's pop-up did. Unfortunately, only the 7D has the ability to put the pop-up in manual and turn the preflash off.

Its the system the Canon rebels use to help with AF in low-light: most other cameras use dedicated lights for it that done strobe as obnoxiously.

I ended up returning the XS and getting a Nikon D3000.
