Default inside pics?

My house has horrible lighting and i am wondering what 'simple" things I could set up to take some pictures.. I see poeple say the set up a box with a hole in the bottom. what kind of light are you using? A flash light.. a slave light? One person took a clap light for this self portrait, but what type of light and what watts do you use not to show shadows behide your subjects? If i get some material for background whats the best kind to buy?
I havent a clue.. I cant afford the expensive equiptment, but it seems by some threads stuff made at home work good.. any information would be so helpful....
Its dark, dreary and rainy here . would like to occupy some of my time trying to learn to take some pictures....
thanks.

My recent blog post covers what to look for in continuous lighting, my next post in this series will cover a few cheap and easy lighting kits you can put together yourself.

Default Lighting

I took both of these using kitchen table, two pieces of black poster board and overhead kitchen lighting as well as a flash used on remote. Real simple and cheap. The best part was teaching myself to get the best results by changing the lighting around. The overhead light in kitchen is on a dimmer.
