Default Nikon D90 SB-600 help

Hello all
I know i am new here but i am hoping that someone on here might be able to help

Last night i was using my flash wirelessly having my Nikon D90 pop up flash as the master and the SB-600 as the slave now it took about 40 shots working no problem and then the pop up flash stopped firing and so i put all the batteries on charge to make sure that wasnt the issue but now i cannot get the SB-600 to fire after the pop up flash no settings have been changed and if i put the SB-600 on the camera on TTL then it works no problem

please has any one got any suggestions

Many thanks in advance

Karl

Does the pop-up flash fire now?

I use this same setup and I do not know what caused the pop-up flash not to fire. I had a similar problem with it not working and I had to reset the settings on both the camera and the flash and it fixed the problem.

Keep in mindL the CLS system that the pop-up flash and SB flashes use is Infra-red based, which means it has Line Of Sight (LOS) limitations. I've found that with the flashes BEHIND me, the success rate is lowered.

D90: You need to use channel 3 in commander mode when shooting wireless with SB600, not 1 (which is the default setting).

SB-600: Resetting the SB-600 disables wireless mode entirely if I remember correctly. You have to enable it again.

So, resetting both is not a problem solver, if I am right.

As long as both the Camera and the Flash are on the same channel it should work.

It's odd that Nikon made the D90 default to Channel one, since the SB600 defaults to channel 3. Especially since the D70 defaulted to 3 in commander mode.

thanks for all your comments i took my camera to a shot in town where there is a Nikon pro there and he said my pop up flash is not behaving itself so its got to go back

now i just had another play and set the SB-600 on wireless and then set it to channel 3 and then in the camera i then set it to TTL and then AA and then when the flash fired my SB600 decided to make these weird noises like a fire alarm and then kept flashing for 3 seconds and then stopped!! hmm

but when i shooting my pop up flash is just not firing all the time so there definatly a problem with it

if i use it in TTL tho it works fine along with using the SB-600 on the camera it works fine!! so i just dont know

hmmm

Thanks
Karl

No. As long as the flash is on a channel, it'll work. The D90 has 3 channels: it can control 3 sets of lights independent of eachother. if theyre all set the same, the speedlight jut needs to be on one channel, regardless of number.

I know but they are defaulting to different channels, and to be using the same channel you need to change settings on the flash or on the camera, and the D90 is just easier to adjust. The SB-600 defaults to channel 3, so changing the D90 to channel 3 as well should be the easiest way to solve the problem.
