Question Studio set up...

I just ordered my very first studio equipment, background stand, backgrounds, continuous lighting (2) with umbrellas.

I need some input. I might have missed a thread on 'set-up' and sorry in advance if I did.

How far from my objects do I place the umbrella lights? I've seen different set ups, some having the umbrellas facing the subject and some facing away...which way is correct?

Thanks in advance for all of your input.

Your layout will likely never be the same twice. Just experiment, see what works in your space and what to avoid, how lighting power and distance affect eachother. Have fun!

Depends on the type of umbrella you have, shoot through can be used either way. Ones where there is a black backing on the umbrella will need to be placed so the hot light is pointing away from the person while the inside of the umbrella points toward them.

Shoot through umbrellas can be used either way, the quality of light will be different between the two configurations. Try experimenting to see the difference yourself.

As for distance the closer the umbrella is to the subject the softer the light will be, the further away the harder the light.

as for continuous light.. unless it has a rheostat type dial where you can adjust the power you prettymuch need to move the stand backwards and forwards to suit how bright you want it.
