300 watts is not allot of light you might be able to shoot 400 iso at f5.6 but not anything like 100 iso.. Maybe if you shoot like f 1.8. I went the CFL route and quickly changed...

Honestly I would look into getting a single light and work on 1 light portraits till you can build up a decent lighting kit. It is better to spend the whole budget on one good piece of lighting gear than get 3 pieces of garbage that you can not use.

This conversation always comes up... I don't regret switching from CFL to small strobes one bit.

I agree with RexK.... Start saving for a alien bee. Or go twards a fexable and portable strobe setup. You can read more at http://strobist.blogspot.com/. What I would do is buy used Nikon SB-24 or SB-28 for like 70-120$ then buy a stand umbrella bracket and umbrella... Then buy a cactus v4 trigger from gadget infinity

Cactus V4: 39.95

Nikon SB-24 - 70-120$
http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=nik...B-24&_osacat=0

8 foot light stand: 34.99

Impact umbrella bracket: 13.99
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...a_Bracket.html

Impact 45 inch umbrella: 14.95

~ Total 173.88$ without tax and shipping

This is the type of setup I have and it is perfect... You have full control of your lights and one light is all you need to start.. Grab a big pice of white project board and there is your other source. :P
