Well, I cxled it - b/c it did not come with any umbrellas (gotta love that) so I am gonna getthe kit one from Penn Camera after the hubby gets home.

And Sarah, I do hope to outgrow it , I'll think of it as a $200 ($139 plus tax plus bulbs...) class and I really do just want it for indoor shots in a small area, but I guess I need a reflector for outdoor ones...?

jdepuold, why should I go with strobes, I know nothing about this stuff, so please explain in very simple words...

And I only spend money that I have made, that way I don't go NUTS!

Strobes get you a lot more power and flexibility without the heat or power consumption you get from continuous lights.

And I assume with strobes you can dial down the power if needed. Mna, I better strat that lighting book I bought...who knew my son (he started this obsession of mine ) would cost me so much money! LOL

Yeah, you have complete control. Unlike continuous lights, dialing the power back doesn't affect white balance.

Sorry I haven't posted the basic setup yet. Been so busy with Christmas and then leave tomorrow for a trip. When I get back, I will be making a video on a basic setup. There are quite a few out there already but they seem to be missing some detailed information.

To be honest those lights that you did purchase I'm glad you canceled. I wouldn't ever use them myself so I would never recommend them to anyone else.

I'm trying to follow your thread. I sympathize with you! I went back and forth for the longest time trying to figure out what I wanted to do. I found a pretty good strobe set up from Calumet but it wasn't very portable and I already have a one strobe strobist set up...anyway it was so confusing. I just went with another strobist light. But I mostly only use mine outside, with the exception of a prom in April (which is really the only reason I bought more lighting instead of a good telephoto lens). I hope the lighting you chose works out and now you can breathe a huge sigh of relief that you pulled the trigger

Well the trigger has been 1/2 way pulled. I now need to find some test subjects - my normal guinea pig is sooo busy building lego sets, I cannot bribe him with a THING! I might take some pics of his action figures or something - not really ready for self portrait - too much pressure

What I like about the set that I purchased is that it breaks down pretty easily and fits in a duffle bag...what I do not like is the bulbs are expensive and they do not last very long...just a few hours (not that they will be on that long - but still...
