Windowlight Portaiture

. For indoor portraits, window light is a great source-First choose a window on the side of the house away from the sun-you don’t want direct sunlight, it’s too harsh. When you position your model close to a window, you get a soft light to one side of the face, and because the inside of the room is relatively dark, the other side of the face will be in shadow -a 3 dimensional look for your portrait.
Again, by using a reflector, ( Gold gives a warm tanned look, White will be most used, and Silver gives a glint to the model’s eye) you can arrive at the 2-stop difference - For instance F 11 for window -lit side of face, and F 5.6 for the shadow side- ( 3:1 ratio) for the ideal portrait.

Default lighting question for photographing swim meets

Hi everyone,

I am new to the forums and have a lighting question. I do not have a photo ready to share yet. My children are members of swim team and I have been taking photos at their indoor meets and I cannot figure out settings to get a nice color.

I am shooting with a Nikon D60. I have tried to use the built-in flash and using no flash as well as shooting with dial turned to sports mode.(which I think is more for outdoor use). I am new to slr digital photography and am looking for any helpful hints I can try out at our meet this week. I will send a couple photos(likely to sports forum) for some helpful critiques.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Photohack, what lenses are you using? You need a pretty fast lens - one with a wide aperture. As soon as you can post a pic, you will get some suggestions.

Flash modifier that generally is designed to surround the lens in order to provide soft extremely even lighting,Often used in glamor type shots.

Default Why is everything so yellow?

Greetings from a newbie,
I've had a Nikon Coolpix P80 for 2 years now and am finally experimenting with settings thanks to your site. During the holiday weekend I tried taking the same shot with several different settings. I did this over 3 days and found that every time I use manual settings the shots don't come out true to color, they look rather yellowish. I finally went back to auto mode out of desperation. In that mode everything looks normal. These shots were all in daylight. What am I doing wrong?
