Default SB-700 On-Camera

Wow, I haven't been here in a long time! I hope to be a more frequent visitor this summer as I have more time to take pictures. Anyway, I'd love some advice from the DPS experts.

I have a D80 and couple of prime lenses, which are great, but I'd like to be able to do more shooting indoors and in conditions with less-than-ideal ambient light. But I don't have the budget (or the time, frankly) to delve into Strobist-type stuff and purchase a lot of equipment. Essentially, I'd like to use the SB-700 alone (though bounced, with filters, etc.), on-camera only, for candid photography and informal portraits. Is this hopelessly naive? I mean, is the flash useful alone, or would I be wasting $300?

I've spent some time searching flickr for photos taken with only the SB-700...and I can't find very many at all. It seems to be used mostly off-camera and in combination with other flashes. Is this an accurate observation? (I know, of course, that there are limits to flickr searches.) Arrrghh. What should I dooooo?

Does anyone have any advice? Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I just bought the SB-700 for better indoor photography lighting. I haven't used it much yet but will be using it to photograph indoor events...birthday parties and fundraisers. I'm hoping it will be perfect for these occasions.
