Very nice. I watched both videos and think you did a nice job. You have the "everyman" kinda of feel to your video which I think a lot of people can relate to...

Also perfect illustration of what you can do with just one light...

Pretty nice tutorial, but just a couple of nitpicks, if I may.

1. Typo in the beginning - it should say "Etc.", not "Ect". It's short for "Et Cetera". That's just my spelling nazi coming out, lol.

2. The very beginning seemed more like a "look at all my cool gear" than a tutorial...not really necessary in what's supposed to be a lighting tutorial. Most people that are looking for a tutorial in lighting aren't going to care what cameras/lenses you use. I'm an Alien Bee girl too so I do appreciate that recommendation, but I'd have mentioned that there are other excellent lighting systems out there as well. I did like how you included the Photovision target and showed how to check the histogram and set CWB, though; that was a great tip (I may look into that target, I just use a DGK for CWB). So was showing your settings. One thing you left out was what power you had the AB on, though.

3. The first few shots you took where the baby was laying with her head to camera left should have had the light also to the left. Downlighting is always more flattering than uplighting. When you turned her the other way, the light was much prettier!

4. I also like how you mentioned that the room was nice and warm for the baby. I usually tell my clients to have the room at about 85 degrees by the time I get there - I say "if we're sweating, it's perfect for the baby". However, having the baby on that high table, especially without a spotter, gave me the heebie-jeebies. Pretty much every newborn photographer I know uses a huge beanbag on the floor and just lower the light stand all the way down. Most folks think a newborn can't move so he or she will be safe on a table, but I've heard horror stories about babies startling and rolling right off in a split second (wish I could find the link to the story, a few years ago there was a photographer that was sued because the baby was injured). Even when I have the beanbag on the floor, I've got Mom or Dad spotting - thank God. I had a baby startle once and she nearly rolled off, the mom was right there to grab her.

That's my two cents anyway. As Bruce said, it's a pretty nice tutorial for showing what can be done with one light. Is that the large or the giant softbox from PCB? I have the large (32x40) and love it, but I've been debating the Westcott 50x50.

Susan,

Thanks for the comments, and you certainly sound like quite the Pro.

My fiancé Michele was just out of frame as the dotter and I assure you our 2 week old baby girl was safe from rolling off the table!

The reason I decided to show the equipment was not to show off what we have, but to show the people that are interested exactly what we use. We constantly get asked "what lens are you Using ect.."

Best,
Jay

No worries...didn't mean to offend. Was just giving my lil' ole opinion, is all. Like I said, all in all a pretty decent tutorial.

And congrats on your new baby - she's really beautiful!
