Which you did use a side/split lighting?

+1 to what Osmosis said - it depends entirely on what I want the light to do - sometimes I use a snoot, sometimes I use a honeycomb (sometimes I use a snoot WITH a honeycomb), sometimes I use a softbox, sometimes an umbrella. I've even been known to use a completely bare un-modified strobe from the side, to give a particularly harsh and unnatural effect.
