You set the power of the Sb-600 in camera (using the commander flash menu). if you've got it compared to your Yongnuo and it appears to be less bright, its probably because the chinese flash has a higher output. You'll likely find that the SB-600 is about the same when the Yongnuo is set to 1/2 or 1/4.

But only if you set the flash to Manual correct? If you leave it on TTL you have to adjust the compensation?

Exactly.

You have to set the Yongnuo manually on the flash though, and it's likely more powerful than the SB-600.

TTL won't take background light into consideration (well, not really anyway). It only is looking at your subject.

How far is your subject from the umbrella? I forget if you mentioned if you're shooting through or reflecting. Honestly, when I'm using an umbrella, I'm usually at a lower power than 1/1.

Random Umbrella Tip: If you can see the umbrella shadow in the picture then you have your umbrella to far away from your flash, or your flash is zoomed in to wide. That shadow is actually light spilling from the edges of your umbrella.

Zoomed in too wide or out too wide?

Yeah - your flash has a zoom function which (basically) adjusts the spread and focus of the light according to the focal length you're shooting at. When it's communicating directly with the camera, it'll automatically adjust itself between 24mm and 85mm and although I'm a Canon shooter and thus not familiar with the Nikon Speedlights, I'm assuming that you can switch to manual zoom control and adjust it yourself.

If you have the zoom set too wide for the umbrella, then light will spill out around the edges, and if you have it set too close, you won't be using the full size of the umbrella. Adjusting the zoom on the flashgun and moving the umbrella closer or further away, will affect the effective size of your light source - whether you use the full size of it, or only a part of it will depend entirely on what you're wanting to do at the time.
