Exclamation Cheap, but good landscaping lens for D90?

I need to pick up a second lens, because all I have due to budgeting when I first bought my D90 is a 50mm f/1.8. So I now I believe I have enough money for a newer lens ($300). I'm looking for something that's really good on landscaping, yet not too expensive.

I came across this picture (http://aquate.us/u/1253040.jpg) and really liked it. Is there a lens in the $100-300 range that works well on landscaping?

Thanks,
Mitch.

for 100 to 300 I highly doubt you will gte new lens for that try e-bay or the like for a second hand one and there a few about I found getting to know my local camera shop ideal as anyone putting one up for sale I would be informed by them .....

try to get a wide angle they range from 10 -12 up to about 24mm ideal for landscapes as you get more of the view in .... nice tripod and away you go

You might find a Sigma 10-20mm HSM for about $350 used if you are lucky - its a nice wide lens.

The Tokina 12-24mm f/4 is a great lens for the price ($400 new). It's very sharp and reasonably fast throughout the zoom range. I have one and love it for shooting landscapes, or anything that requires a truly wide angle on a DX body.

I'd recommend Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 though.. It offers slightly wider than Tokina 12-24 with compromising less range... However, the static F/2.8 is reasonably good coz it offers more stop down for better sharpness at same smaller aperture (i.e. at F/11, 11-16 got 4 stops already while 12-24 only got 3 stops). I'm also using a D90 and this lens is perfect!
The price is roughly similar with 12-24... But seriously, go for this one. You'd rarely use the missing 17-24 range for landscapes though ^^
Cheers mate

Does anyone have any guesses as to what settings were used to capture this photo? It's amazing!

Definitely a long exposure, with a deep DoF. I'd guess around the f/16 range, likely in the 30s shutter speed. Low iso.

Might also be a bit of either post-process editing (that sky, in particular), too.

Definitely something that can go nice and wide. If you only have a 50mm lens, then it might be worth looking out for a cheap, second-hand "kit lens" - probably at 18-55mm. People often feel they outgrow the kit lens after some time with their camera, and you might be able to pick one up at a low enough price that it doesn't set you back too long from getting some better glass later on. That would let you experiment with a range of focal lengths.

I use my 50mm (and 90mm) lenses much more than my 18-55mm kit lens but the latter was excellent to get started on and I still find it useful quite often.

Well, I would have waited for a full frame camera if you really love wide angles.
Come on, the 20 too long, your not going to do much better for the price, and I wouldnt recommend buying up too many DX lenses with Nikon releasing more and more FX cameras.
Personally, Id go with the 20mm 2.8D very sharp, quite fast and also not so big to be a nuisance to carry. C
It also fouses very fast due to the fact that a quarter turn takes it from 10" to infinity, so on your D90 it will be fast!

The M8 is hated by most who bought one, and I wouldnt recomend that you become part of the club.
