Default Fish Wheel Riverscape

Fish Wheel

Subsistence fishing is a way for Native Alaskans to survive and the fish wheel is one way they do that. As the rivers current pushes the paddle arms around the baskets bring up the fish below. This riverscape is on the Chitina River in Alaska

I like that you see no development on the other side of the river. There don't appear to be any utility lines either. It appears that the land is just as it probably looked 100 years ago. Nice.
What time of day was this taken? Curious.

HockeyFan, It was 9:37 pm. It's nice to have the added light that time of night during the spring/summer months. It makes for long shooting days. Thanks for your interest.

I'm new to the forum (obviously) and just found this picture. I was in McCarthy last year when the salmon began to run. It was amazing to watch. I took 1,700 pictures without even trying hard.

It's an incredible place and, as Hockey Fan pointed out, completely devoid of encroaching development.

I envy you living in such a paradise.

I'm hoping to find more of your pictures posted as I find my way around.

-D.
