Default tree - sky problem

Hi There - The last photo I tried to up-load didn't work - only thumbnail was visible.. not sure what happened with that but hopefully this one will upload properly because I would really like your feedback on this type of problem if that can be had in this forum. If not, please do direct me to the right thread.
Again, practicing with new dslr... just taking different pictures different ways to get a feel for it. I loved this shot of the fence, trees, the line of the fence going towards what should be a nice blue sky with some cloud.. but hence, I could not make it so that both tree and sky were properly exposed.(sun was behind me, about half hour before it set) Auto bracketing, nothing. filter? nope, not it either... help?

Hi,
The shot is not visible. I guess you reduced the size of the pic before uploading. It is very small. Please upload again.

Based only on the thumbnail image you uploaded, I'm going to say that the problem is dynamic range. That is, the range in brightness between the sky and the shadowed sides of the trees is greater than the range that your camera can capture.

In that situation, you can expose for the trees and let the sky blow out or expose for the sky and let the trees block up, or you can shoot multiple different exposures, combine them into an HDR image and tone-map them to something you can see on a monitor or print.

If you shoot in RAW, you can get about a 2 stop increase in effective dynamic range, but you're still likely to need to go to HDR to get detail in both shadows and sky.

I cant even get the thumbnail to open up, one thought though, stopping down your your f stop number to f/8 will give you more depth of field, the more you step up your f stop like say f/2.8 you get less depth of field.

Thanks Doug - appreciate your comments. Sounds like hdr would be the best idea in this case.

As for size of picture - for some reason I up-loaded this picture in the same manner as on another thread & the site won't open it up full size... not sure why that is. Perhaps I need a new version of Safari for it to work.

As mentioned above, it is a dynamic range issue with your camera. BTW, this is not uncommon, but it is somewhat fixable in post processing. Quickly did the following edit using the Shadow Highlight tool, a Curves layer, and a High Pass filter layer

The sky is just a background, I like the fence line and curve to it.
