Default Looks good to me...but to you? city/ cloud landscape

I just bought a Canon EOS Rebel T1i off a co worker. This is one of the first things I did with the camera. This is my first fully manual digital camera and Im still learning things everyday. With that, tell me what you think. Please, tell me all the faults you see in my photography. Tell me how I could have improved this shot.

The first thing that strikes me about this is that you have too much sky with no detail in it, and the interesting things, the clouds and city lights, are all bunched together at the bottom.

First of all, welcome to the world of digital photography. That's a purchase you will never regret. You've come to the right place to learn. DPS has some great articles to help you, and I would go look for the articles that address exposure time, ISO, and aperture. Those three concepts work together and I think you'll be off to a running start by learning them. Also, I really like the ideas that are shared here in the critique forums.

About your image: It all seems to be background. If you can find something to put in the foreground, it might make things a little more interesting. If you haven't already, go over to Flickr and look for city shots that you like and study them to figure out why you like them. You'll get some insight that way to improve your own shots. Keep shooting; Of the thousands and thousands I've shot over the last few years, only a small handful have ever seen the light of day.

This photo seems to be lacking a subject and contains a lot of empty sky. Before you press the shutter release think about what you want to emphasize and convey to the viewer. What made you decide to take this photo? What grabbed your interest? Determine your subject from these questions and then compose your shot.
