It's awfully easy. My first shots where done with about 3 minutes of setup while I was supposed to be doing the dishes one evening. I just noticed the drip from the faucet splattering on a dinner plate. Wondered if I could catch it. Pulled out the camera and onboard flash and took a few shots. A dozen blanks then one that put a big smile on my face!

My shot from a black ceramic dinner plate in the kitchen sink. (-:}

I was about to say that yeah...back in the film days, you needed the "high tech" equipment so you can time it perfectly since you couldn't just blast through 150 frames in burst mode... But now with digital, as long as you have the focus and the lighting worked out, the rest is just setting the camera on either burst or, if you have it, high speed burst, and blast away!

...kinda fun actually. And once you get the hang of it, you can do shots like this with the same concept!

this was taken with a similar setup as the water drop shot, just one bit of advice, don't use a glass cup with anything other than water drops, you might have a chance that the glass will chip and shatter.

Thanks for posting the "how to". It looks like a lot of fun! Also inspiring is Shinichi Maruyama's work. He incorporates black ink with water and creates some amazing images.

Droplets 14

Droplets 5

Some great pics in this thread, i've been working on my own droplet shots, a couple above, and the full set can be found here:
High Speed Droplets and Splashes - a set on Flickr

I actually built an electronic photo gate with a delay to trigger the flash and reduce the number of wasted shots. It kind of works, next time I set the gear up I'll take a photo of the setup to post here.

Great discussion and photos!!. It's neat to see and read how everyone else does it.
This is what I did this weekend. I also started to play around with trying to capture a reflection in the droplet. well they are not perfect (I still need to try and invert the reflection and get it a bit more defined) I do like the beginning results.
If any one has any suggestions would like to hear from you.

Smile what about P&S

Can I do this with my P&S? Canon SX10 IS or Nikon P60. I have a Nikon D40 also which has gone for repairs.
Thanks for sharing this set up and other tips.

I think the picture at the beginning of the thread has the correct items you would need. However use your imagination.
