Default (another) creative use of shutter speed

upon request from a few people, i've decided to repost this picture from Share Your Shots here. personally, i don't feel that i'm up to par with most of the people here, which is why i didn't post this here in the first place. i'm only a beginner, after all anyway, on to the shot.

the test of time

EXIF
Exposure: 5
Aperture: f/22.0
Focal Length: 18 mm
ISO Speed: 400
Exposure Bias: -1 EV
Flash: Off

first, i set up a black base and background to dispel any distractions.
then, i set up my camera on a tripod and positioned the clock in the middle of the frame at 18mm.
i then set the camera to a slow shutter speed of 5s and set the exposure value at -1.
after that, i released the shutter and started zooming in, starting from 18mm, stopping at a few focal lengths (non-specific. just stop wherever ) and ending at 55mm. this will give you the effect of layers as seen in the photo above.

for post processing, i cropped the sides a tiny bit and made minor adjustments to the lighting as well as editing the photo to a sepia tone.

that's all! it's relatively simple, but takes a little practice (well, for me anyway!). remember to stop at a few different focal lengths to capture the layers.
hope this was helpful to all!

That's a very cool effect. I've seen a lot of people zooming while shooting long shutter speeds, but those images always felt very disorienting to me. I think this might be worth trying. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks very much for explaining how you took the shot. It does sound much easier than I think it will be in practice. I am going to give it a try in the near future. Anyway, I love the shot, your treatment is excellent and, again, many thanks and very well done

Thanks for the idea of stopping the zoom at a couple of places. I think it help ground the shot to see more solid images rather than all blur.

dakwegmo : thanks, i feel the same way, which is why i tried stopping in between instead of just zooming straight in.

fog: haha thanks!

stitchbug: thanks so much, although i didn't do that much PP!

rahat5810: thanks.

glayva: yes, it sounds easier in theory than in practice, as it is with most things. thank you for your kind comments.

mellen: you're most welcome!
