ill try...
set camera to "M" your Aperture set to f16 and set your shutter speed to Bulb.. Read your manual if you dont know how to do this..

if you have a remote (which you need) release the shutter... after about 2 mins or so close the shutter... the length of time depends on how dark your night is...
hope this helps if not let me know

Wonderful discussion on this topic, I wish I've come across it earlier when I attempted to shoot a similar one locally...I just want to point out that I got here looking for Lighting topics, but was surprised I ended up with Lightning instead, since the topic title was misspelled. But great serendipity, all's well that ends well, because I loved it just the same! I got to learn a lot, especially with timing. Keep up the good work!

I just bought a EOS 40D and I cant find anything as to setting shutter speed to "bulb" I am new to dslr but have a "basic" understanding but I guess not on this one. Can someone tell me what the "bulb" setting on a 40D would be . Thanks

pop your 40D in manual mode and dial the shutter speed around to "bulb"

When I take lightning shots my sky is always black. Or, in a few of them the sky had a sepia tone to it. Like the one below:

Post processing via software. What color would you like your picture to be?
