Default Afro in the sky

I shot some promo stuff for a band last week and have had a lot of positive feedback about the lighting for the above image. I was really aiming for an oversatured, vivd look for this set of photos so once I had the lighting set up I pushed the colours hard in post.

For this image I used a combination of side lights using 2 off camera flashes and the sunlight, as well as a ring flash for the front fill. You can read about it in more detail on my blog entry, where I have provided a lighting diagram and a pull back shot, as well as some steps on how I got the colours this way.

How I shot it: Afro in the sky How I Shot It ZAREKRGRAPHY – Photography by Zarek Rahman

Any feedback or comments are appreciated!

Very cool shot, the over-saturation works well in this shot.

Brilliant shot. A quick question - When you used the eraser to to scrub out the bits of the photo that you didnt want to be affected by the topaz filter, how did you erase the edges of the afro as they look very difficult to be erased. Did you use a graphics tablet and a pen or a mouse?

I used a tablet and pen, but I could have done it just as well with the mouse because I didn't bother erasing the very ends of the afro. If I did want to get a cleaner edge then I would probably have used the new refine edge tool with smart radius and painted around the edges of the afro, the tool would have picked it up because there is a big difference in contrast between the hair and the sky.
