Default Dramatic Flower Lighting

Recently I decided to try something new and take some photos of some flowers with my new (old) Carl Zeiss Jena 35mm f2.4. I also had an old manual vivitar flash gun with a remote trigger that is set of when the built in flash goes off. I set this to its lowest power and pointed it towards the white PVC plastic in our conservatory. Then I focused on the flower at f2.4, stopped down to f22 and set my shutter speed to 1/180 second, ISO 100 and built in flash to 1/64 power.
Flower In the Darkness
And the first shot turned out like this !

The combination of a quick shutter speed and a powerful flash allowed for a dark background isolating my subject yet a beautifully lit flower!

Since then I have also got these.

Thanks for taking a look and you can find more of my pictures at Flickr: Chasing the Shot's Photostream

Default Thanks

Thanks for this tutorial. I'm a Nikon gal and have the SB600 and just read that I can also do this with my d90 and no need for an extra trigger. Lots of Christmas flowers to try this on!

Default dramatic flower lighting

Thanks for the tip, great site on Flickr.

Wondering how it might help with the on sight photos.
this was shot using the on camera flash down two stops, Nikon D300s. and a reflector under and to the side.

Can't reiterate how awesome that first shot is... the others are nice too, but that first one is so clear and detailed, that it's like I'm the one holding it and seeing it that close, but I couldn't possibly hold it so still. Great job!
