Default Walk to the Park

Hello,

I'm new to the art of photography and DPS has immensely helped me learn and get better each month.

Recently I finally got over my shyness to carry my camera outside and shoot and went to our local park. I had squirrel as my targets to shoot. This particular shot I took when I was waiting for the squirrels to get comfortable with my presence and come closer for a better photo opp. Second pic is when squirrel has been backlit by the Sun.

Please do share your comments about both the pictures if you can. I would love to know how I could have bettered these pictures. That green footpath would you suggest it should have had something in the blurry background to look at or should have been less shallow depth of field. Please also share which one do you like the most.

Hi Ved:

Welcome to DPS.

The path does not indicate that it leads anywhere. There is no intrigue to want to follow it.

You might want to crop the squirrel more closely to the rule of thirds, as it is difficult to see as the subject because everything appears in similar shades. Try to adjust the exposure, the photo looks a bit flat.

Keep shooting.

If you threw an interesting leaf out there on the path picture it could have changed the whole thing.

Thanks Wejustin for the tip! I'll try this with the same framing and post the result...what do you guys suggest for the depth of field? Is it fine the way it looks now or should the grass look a bit crisper than it is now?

Default Second Attempt

Hello guys,

Here're my second attempts to better the path picture as suggested. Please do share how you feel about this one. Does adding myself and a leaf on the path add something to the picture? Or the one with just the flower looks better? I can see the difference between the very first path picture above without anything in the background and the one that has something to look into. It does look a little more interesting but what do you guys think?

I really like the composition better on the first image in your original post. It's taken from a lower vantage point and the more vibrant green along the edge really works along the path.
