I do keep up with the (Joneses) - the Joneses who do the beta testing. As I watched it unfold, sales was slow due to bad PR regarding possible hardware upgrades. PC retailers tried to give options to users who didn't want Vista, but Bill was bull-headed. There are those *few* who do not know, do not care, must have the latest. These are the same people who stood in line for hhhhhrs to get an IPhone. Personally I don't care what they do. As long as they're somewhere standing in line and not being a danger to the road playing with their gadgets, I'm happy.

I have both... MacBookPro and a couple of Windows based machines... They all do stuff ok... you know, they all crash from time to time.. Mac looks better, Windows crashes more [just because of the way the OS works...or doesn't] ....get what you can afford, get what you are happy with using... do NOT be swayed by people telling you that macs are better or windows machines are easier to use etc etc... go play in a macshop... they'll let you use one all day if need be... see what you think - software costs.. you have windows stuff as someone else mentioned... there are some ripper windows machines out there these days... [i'm still staying away from Vista... it's flakier than a big flake bar] ...that said, i've just upgraded to Leopard despite the warning - and - I love it... no jpg issues... no closing the lid issues... it all works great...

Macs don't impress me, we have to use them for school, and I hate them with a fiery passion.
I'll never leave my pc. Too expensive for macintosh, and i enjoy building my own PC.
Adobe lightroom is great, either road you choose, mac or PC, for editing, storing, etc..

Just a note of caution
I have been an avid Mac supporter for many years. I bought an imac G5, the (all in one unit you saw) less than two years ago. It now has two vertical lines in the screen as well as a faded strip of about 2 inches down the right side. I googled this problem and found many others have the same problem. Because of the all in one display this is a very expensive problem to fix. A petition online has been started to get apple to address this issue, but so far if it is out of warranty you are on your own. Many like me did not buy the extended warranty because our experience has been so good until now.
I never thought the day would come when I would advise someone not to buy a Mac but I recommend that you google this so you are aware of the models involved.

I am a full blooded Mac lover, but for the same reason I have not puchased and all-in-one from them or any manufacture. Laptops? no choice, love both of mine and plan to get the Mac mini for Christmas. I bought the Samsung 24" monitor for my homebuilt PC and will use the mini on it also.
A co-worker bought that new HP all in one gimmick, same deal if you have a problem with one part your out of a complete computer. Luckly he was able to return his and loose the 15% restocking fee.

I too have had a problem or two with an iMac, however, if you have ever opened it up, when you look inside you will see that everything is very modular, and easy to change out with new products, I don't dissagree that there may be problems, but if you go with the service plan, I think it is $150 that type of thing would be covered, chances are if you buy a pc from Best Buy or Circuit City, you will have to pay a similar amount and in my experience you get less service, so yes, even a mac can have a technical problem, just like any other computer out there, you just have to make sure you back up your things, and make sure if you see a problem, you resolve it right away, don't wait till you think it is getting close to the time where your coverage will end.

i've had my mac a few months, and it's great!
i didn't read through all of the replies. but:
you can run windows on the mac, using parallels at the same time.
alternatively, for better performance windows, you can use boot camp, built into the new mac operating system, and run one or the other, having a choice when you switch on. pc's cant do that!

Well its time I chime in. I have been a PC user for ten years, and yes windows didn't start getting reliable until Windows 2000. I now currently have to PC's running Vista. Let me tell you, if you have a new machine with at least 2 gigs of ram and 128 MB video card. The Vista OS will be as stable as anything you experience with a mac. I work with Macs both at school and with friends computers and Vista delivers. If you already have software for a windows based PC then don't make the expensive mistake of switching to a Mac just because its pretty, or because it "just works" which in my opinion is another word for less flexible. Also windows machines are less expensive, and to hear that people should not try to find Macs with comparable specs to their PC's is odd. If I can by a high end PC X for 999.95 at Office Depot and a Mac X with the same processing power and memory/ video capabilities costs 1500+, I am going to go with the PC especially with the knowledge that if I buy a Mac I am going to have to sink even more money into buying all new software to work with it.

If I am going to buy a Mac so I can run windows on it, I would still buy the PC because that will only cost me 999.95 to run windows. instead some people are arguing that one should spend 1500 plus because Mac is so much better, only they are also advocating that you don't have to buy more software just install windows on it. Well how about we just install windows on a windows machine and save that extra 500+ for something else.

It should also be noted that with a little nohow in working with a PC, a non Mac computer can be upgraded year after year as much as you like to stay up to par with the new technology that is available. You can do this very cheaply as well if you buy the hardware yourself and install it yourself. With a Mac, expect to pay a lot of money, and not to get much mileage out of your machine as far as being able to upgrade it over the years.

That's my two cents....
