Default Where do you come from?

Does anyone think that where we come from is important?

What do you prefer in seeing at the top of a post:

This.....

I like to see where the poster is located, to see and read opinions from around the world.

What do you think? Do you think we should have our location in the post header?

Cheers,

John W

You do see the location in the post header if the person has filled it out in their profile.

I find it useful to have the location especially if people are asking for advice on gear. Makes it easier to know what the local currency is if they forget to specify. I also like it for learning where landscapes are taken. That being said, doesn't bother me in the least if people don't want to fill that part out.

I find it very useful. A lot of things are location dependant form currency to camera model numbers, time of year to distance to certain locations.

Everyone should add it.

I think there are good reasons to fill it in, which is why I have done so. It does affect the kind of response I might make - not out of prejudice but because it helps me judge if my experience (mainly based in the UK) might be relevant to share. However, even if the field was mandatory, there would be no way to be absolutely sure it had been filled in correctly. I think it is more likely to be accurate (and useful) left as a voluntary piece of information.

Of course, don't forget that where somebody is based right now doesn't necessarily tell you that much about who they are or where they "come from" in a wider sense of the phrase. I'm based in Oxford, UK but you can't tell from that if I'm a university lecturer, a cleaner at the local car works or a temporary visitor from any other part of the globe. Whatever information someone volunteers, you still need to take time to get to know them through their posts and your interaction together.

I'd like to see it filled out because I like to see the works of people from all over the globe.
But I also understand the many reasons why one wouldn't want to fill in that part.

Personally I like to see where people come from - it makes the world feel a smaller place and I am constantly amazed that someone on the other side of the world is commenting on one of my images and vice versa, I like to see images from other people in the UK.

I've put a bit of detail in my header because a) Chelmsford, although a county town is relatively unknown in England (I think?), b) Essex, as it's the county and c) United Kingdom, as there is a Chelmsford in USA and I wanted to avoid any confusion!

I think you could probably drop Essex (if you want), since there aren't any other Chelmsfords in England. Anyone who is half-familiar with Essex could probably place Chelmsford there. On the other hand, it doesn't make the whole line too long and unwieldy to leave it in.
