Default Whats with...

...the URL link text changer thingy on the site now. Its been active for a few weeks and in the most part its quite anoying. It seems if you post a URL, rather than simply creating a hyperlink the forum is adding some text from the apge header of the URL or something.

It works OK when the header is meaningfull but when its not or includes a load of branding stuff like flickr does it can be really distracting and hard to read. I often like to post a URL rather than a text link as it lets people see where they are going and its more obviously a link. If I wanted a text link I would have created one.

For example a link that used to look like this:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/jamesfletcher/4021331777/

now looks like this:
Spy plane? Or just a lomoed up shot from a regular plane! on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Anyone else find this anoying or am I in the minority?

Yeah, it is a bit annoying. I thought I was the only one. LOL! I noticed it just a bit ago when I posted the link to that color test. I was thinking...why did it do that? But I just shrugged and went on.

Yeah its one of those things that is only a bit anoying so why say anything. But if everyone finds it a bit anoying then we need a protest!

Maybe its just the 3 of us!

Same. It makes linking so much neater and it means I dont have to actually embed the link into text.

I think it's somewhat annoying as well. I like to see exactly what site I'll be visiting, not just the title of the page on that site. I realize I can just hover over the link and look at my bottom toolbar to see what site the link points to, but frankly I'm too lazy to do that.

I think it's a handy option for some URLs, for example if you point to a Wiki article on something, there's more chance someone will click it, since they see what's it about.
But, as you said, with some links it can be useless.

Just trying one from flickr...
