Default Ever get a request like this?

Got another call today from someone who found me on google. She's a dog breeder and has a brand new litter. She asked me if I did that - I told her I'm a child and family photographer and don't specialize in pet photography. She asked me if I'd be willing to give it a shot, or if I could recommend someone else. I told her that since I don't have a lot of experience in pet photography, I'd rather not, as I wouldn't want her to be disappointed in the photos. I googled "Pet photographers" in my town and found some guy two towns over who does weddings and dogs, LOL - I gave her his website and phone number.

She went on to tell me that she always takes her own pictures of her dogs and even won an amateur photo contest, but that this litter is "special" and she really wants pro photos done. The she asked me about copyright - do I give up all rights to my photos so my clients can do what they please with the pictures? I said no, I never do, and I don't know many photographers that do - and said if she finds a photographer who will, it will most likely be very costly. So she asked me if this other dude would give her the copyright. How the eff am I supposed to know that? I said she'd have to ask him (duh).

She wants to be able to use the photos in contests, submit them to ad agencies, that sort of thing, which is why she wants copyright. Nice, huh?

I did mention that some photographers will license photos out for limited usage. She again asked if they'd retain the copyright. When I said yes, she said "Well, that just makes me very uncomfortable."

I wished her luck.

Wow, she sounds like a piece of work. I would have told her that "I think she needs to stick with taking her own photos." That is the only way she is going to have all the rights. Some people...

Seems like she wanted the images hell or high water. The sad part about it, is she'll most likely find some idiot who will give away the rights.

Definitely a piece of work, Michelle. Jim - good for her if she finds that idiot.

I'm thinking about calling her back and saying I'll do it and give her the copyright. Then I'll say that if I buy one of her puppies, she has to give me the puppy's mother and relinquish all ownership of her.

Just a dog picture how much can you actually expect to make of an image of a doggie.

I'll tell you what give her my email address, I'll take some less then average shots of her puppies and then take one puppy of my choosing as payment.

I love dogs!
