Default We're not thoughtless

. . . but we are overlooking the part about sharing comments with one another.

There are now 480 posts uncommented-on in "Share Your Shots.". I used to try to keep up with those, as have several other well-intentioned members, but it's become too big a job for a few people to handle.

If you have 4 photographs to share, think about commenting on at least the same number of other members' work. Post one, comment on one (or more). It makes the process richer, no one will feel left out, and you may learn something new about members and their work.

If you're one of the 480 who are still waiting for someone to respond to your post, I'm sorry that happened, and I know how it feels. Just don't give up on us. We can do better.

I agree. I think it is important to not just post your shots but also comment on others. I've been remiss more times than not. However, the hard part is that there are so many posts in SYS that threads tend to drop off the first page pretty quickly.

AFAIC I think it's not just important to comments but looking at others work can only serve to help improve your eye and imagination.

Glad you brought this up JC.

I used to do this too I would wander back looking for the new guys to post on etc however I also noticed that it is impossible to keep up I wonder if maybe breaking the Share your shots down into category like another forum does would be a good idea I know some comment on their contacts and so on and miss others but when it turns into a conversation within a thread that should be saved for PM or wall messages that is a job for Admin (I i do this on a nother social site) to clamp down on and politely ask for refrain to give a chance to newbies etc .... I love coming on here but also get disheartened when I have to search for threads through contacts etc then wander about finding the unposted threads if there is a quicker way I would love to know it

Yes, I agree, Share Your Shots can be difficult for us all to keep up with. Everyone has limited time and as the forum grows it becomes more and more difficult to make all the comments we want. I'm sure JC remembers as well as I do when our forum was "younger" we used to read each and every post!

Something I do on days I have a little more time is hit the Search button, go to Advanced Search and Search Options, then change the "Find Threads with"..."At Least 0 Replies" to "At Most 0 replies". When you hit the Search Now button you will find all the threads that haven't had any replies. This way you can find a thread or two that interest you or you feel you may be able to answer.

To be honest I rarely even open SYS anymore

It's just so huge and moves so fast that I don't have a chance of keeping up. I don't bother posting in there as by the time I check back it's on the second or third page.

Perhaps breaking the page into categories like FoG suggested would make life a bit easier for everyone (perhaps not admin though?). That way someone who is into landscapes would be more likely to look through the page more and in turn comment on what they like.

I stopped going to SYS shortly after joining this site. Sorry, but it's impossible to keep up with. Make a post and then watch how fast it drops a page or two.

Catagorizing might work, such as the critique forum with Landscape, Macro, Wildlife, etc. Then if (a big if) you have a favourite topic or two, you might be able to keep up somewhat at least.

Of course the problem with catagorizing is you'd need a full time MOD to keep moving photos to the correct section. Another headache there.

My problem with SYS is the sheer volume. There are so many new posts in there every day that if I post something before heading off to classes in the morning, by the time I GET to my classes, it's half a page down, and by lunch it's off the page. While this means we have some great traffic, it does lead me to believe alot of those posts arent because people have nothing to say but because the posts are simply being superceded by newer ones.

I stopped even trying to keep up with SYS. I agree also that is should be categorized. This may help alleviate some of the problem.

SYS is out of control.

I'll check it out pretty often, but it seems the only threads I open are the ones with a catchy title, unless its someone who's work I admire.

Almost from the beginning, SYS was a popular place. More casual than Critique, and open to any and all kinds of photographs. And it does what we'd hoped - giving new members a place to start and get to know others and become known.

My thought was that if we're busy commenting, we might post fewer new threads there each week, thus slowing the pages down. But human nature being what it is, we all enjoy the limelight, even if it's just for a moment.

I have no solution, and hope that posting about it will bring more ideas and suggestions. SYS is valuable to DPS, it's just a little broken right now. Thanks for the comments so far.
