Lightbulb Open Source Camera

This is interesting. A report from Stanford University - Stanford photo scientists introduce of an open-source digital camera, which will give programmers around the world the chance to create software that will teach cameras new tricks.

See the report and video here.

I especially like the part that mentions it uses Canon lenses. Means I won't have to go out and buy new stuff if I ever get this.

I think that its going to get to the point that you'll just point the camera in the right direction and walk away. Todays cameras are getting so advanced, its just getting too easy. I believe that soon, the professional photographer will be a thing of the past. It makes you wonder what the next step will be.

It's just a case of who makes the decision, you or your camera. This will allow punters to take better mediocre pictures. Hobbyists and pro-togs will still shoot RAW and make their own decisions.

What a fascinating modern age we live in.
While the hardware aspect is pretty innovative, there is already open source firmware for Canon P&S which has been mentioned around here lately. That can already do some cool tricks.
