Question Full Frame cams... Why do you need one?

Hi,

Today we see many semi-pro cameras are competing head-to-head with the full frame semi-pros (I'm not talking about the professional 1D or D3x...etc).

With a better price range, competitive specs (many of them might be better), and using the most recent technology (maybe new metering system, AF modes...etc).

Why would you still want to upgrade your APS-C DSLR to full frame?

Can you list 3 main reasons?

Thanks...

High-iso Noise. Say what you will about new processing algorithms, there's something about shooting a D700 or D3 at 12 800 or 25 600 iso and still getting very useable images.

Getting wide: No FoV crop means your 14mm lens really is a 14mm lens.

DoF: Many will tell you otherwise, but it is possible to better control DoF on a full-frame camera than on anything smaller.

Build: Most full-frame cameras are also "pro" cameras, which means they're built to take a beating and a half.

Because you...

a. love buying more hard drives
b. like working for hours on larger images

and

c. have a huge internet connection especially to upload 100mb images all day!

...but seriously, what Os says, mainly...

Tell me about it that 5D Mark II sure sucks up the hard drive space.

1) Mindset - SLR was and should be 35mm. It is easier to handle and shoot FF for some of us coming from SLR. No more 1.5/1.6x conversions.

2) 'The Holy Grail'. Some of us like to use larger size films/sensors to get details and less noise. I like to shoot Medium Format instead of the smaller FF.

3) Why not! Just wait for the FF consumer bodies.

LoveDSLR -- I got a 8x10 if you like large format and film cost.

Why FF for me - better control of DOF.

Wide angle, low light, bragging rights.

For me, it will be low light.

I will keep my APSC for wildlife/telephoto work.

Haha. I was considering a Sinar or Linhof after my Hasselblad. But I don't mind a digital MF.

What do you mean by "Controlling the depth of field" is better with full frame? You can do that with any camera but it depends on the lens.

Doesn't it?
