Default Will prices ever drop?

I was just flipping through some sites when i found out that there are new SLRs coming out ( Nikon cams) , and i just pondered for a while. Will those older models like the D300 see a price cut because i waiting to get my hands on a "better" cam, though i have nothing against my beloved D40. Any comments on this "hot" topic ?

It would make sense that when the new batch comes out the demand will increase and the older models won't be paid as much attention, therefore price drop. I really hope so anyway. Not that it matters because I'm plain broke, but a cheaper upgrade is a nice thing to look forward to one day

but if you pay close attention, you will notice that prices dont drop dramatically but maybe 200-300 dollars over a period of 6 months+. Not too enticing

People thought that in this world wide resession the prices would tumble, however they have not. Due to exchange rates they have gone up.
But, slowly they will come down again, its just a case of keeping your eyes open and waiting. If people are not buying then some retailers will have to lower their prices to help them stay in business. Better to sell at £30 less than no sale at all.
I wanted a Canon 40D body, but because the price had gone up and I wasn't prepared to pay it, I waited. Then came some new models from Canon and the 40D was no where to be seen, when it was it came with lens, increasing the the price by a few hundred pounds. I didn't want the lens so I waited some more, a lot of waiting here.
Eventualy I managed to get the 40D body for £50 less than it was 6 months ago, without having to have the lens version.
So my advice is just bide your time and it will come down to what you are prepared to pay for it.

The 300s really offers very little over the 300 so I would not expect much of a price move.

There will be a price cut on the D300 but it will not be a drastic one. More likely you will see several cuts spread out over the course of 12-18 months. This is exactly what happened with the D200 when the D300 came out. Basically it all boils down to how much the camera is worth to you. If it is worth $1800 to you now then don't worry about what the price is going to be 18 months from now. otherwise you will always be waiting on the next price drop.

If you're looking for a price drop in any models then you have to think like the person who will do the upgrading. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the new model like from Nikon D200 to D300, Nikon D2 to D3 and Canon 5D to 5D2?

You know there would be a great buy for the D2 and D200 when there was a long waiting period for the D3 and D300 back in 2007.

Looking at your current setup, I would say the wiser thing to do would be to buy better glass.
Your images from the D300 won't look "better" if you still use the same glass.

Just curious, what is it that the D40 is lacking that you'll gain from the D300?

It's just that i felt the D300 and it feels much more natural in my hands i guess, and 1 important thing is it's low-light capabilities. It's not too bad. I mean if you cant get the best thing, you would have to settle for second best.(a D3 is way out of my league)

Waiting for price drops is a mugs game.

When the D300 has dropped low enough there will be a D400 on the horizon and you will be wondering when that will be cheap enough for you to afford. After the D400 the D500 and so on. Just by what you can afford and need now. Can't afford a D300 but the D40 doesn't give you what you need, try a D90, D5000 or D200.
