It's funny that you should mention CD drive speeds. Cause the same rating system is used for memory cards. Which is to say, 150 kBps = 1x.

So if you have a 40x memory card, your resulting burst speed is 6000 kBps which is the same as 6 megabytes per second. But memory cards will also have different read and write speeds. Usually, the read speed will be a bit higher than the write speed. The write speed is usually what is advertised.

Yeah, I guess... I was shooting in JPEG Large (Fine) with the flash off...

Take note that with a DSLR and crop factor your 28-105mm lens won't be as wide anymore. The 400D and 40D are both 1.6x crop, so your 28-105mm lens becomes a 45-168mm lens, which isn't so wide anymore. But if you're shooting sports then maybe the wide end wouldn't matter that much.

Thanks for that warning.

I usually use the 28-105mm for most sports shot. If I got to use the 75-300mm lens, I'm to far away and lighting will be an issue.

It could be an issue for both wide and portrait shots. I can see myself partly beheading people, maybe.

As a 45mm lens, I effectively got a standard 50mm lens, might need a new wide lens.

Get the 18-55mm lens as a kit together with the camera. It's cheap, small, light and has relatively good image quality. It should be wide enough for most uses. Alternatively you can get the much wider (and more expensive) 10-22mm lens.

Getting the extra width (From 28m to 18m) is nice, but at the same time I'm losing zoom (from 105mm to 55mm). The 28-105mm is a good mix of wide, for 'whole of division' shots, and zoom, for individual competitor shots. 105mm gives a good upper body shot, when competitors are close.

Going be some trade off's here, me thinks.

Have to find out, exactly what EOS 400D lens I was using last Sunday.

Thanks matthewchj, the help is much appreciated.

But even at 55mm with a 10 megapixel camera, you can always crop down and not lose much. You can't crop out though (from 28 to 18). Buying the camera with the kit lens can be such a good deal, I'd definitely do it just for the times when you do need a wide angle lens considering that once on the XTi, your resulting starting point is about 50mm for the 28-105 and 28mm for the 18-55. Big difference in my eyes.
