Default Where should I post this?

Do you ever stop and think "where on the forum should I start this new discussion"? Based on the number of times I have to shift things around, I suspect that not everyone can give a strong "yes" to that!

The reason for putting things in the right place is that it makes it a little easier to stay on top of this thriving forum. However, I appreciate that it can be tricky so I thought I would run through some thoughts on where to put things and also to invite any questions you may have.

I have just shifted a thread from the technique area to the critique area so let's start with that.

I think you should post in critique if you want detailed feedback on one of your pictures. We ask that you give some details about the shot - the settings you used and the particular questions you have about it - which may be around a particular aspect of technique. However, it is all about asking for ideas about this one photograph of yours and so belongs in an appropriate sub-section of Critique.

On the other hand, you might be more interested in an aspect of technique. Perhaps you have shots that illustrate something you have learned or something you struggle with but you won't feel upset if people post further illustrations of their own. The aim is to develop understanding of Technique.

I could go on for hours as there are lots of choices of where things could go but does this help towards clarifying the difference between technique and critique? Have you got something you want to post but, to be honest, you are not sure where to put it?

Ask away!

Wulf

Ya know, I'd be all for this post Wulf, but honestly you are preaching to the choir.

And besides, most of the issues you are talking about would easily be solved by people reading the FAQ's. So honestly, what makes you think they'd be more likely to read this then?

If having a discussion gets a few more people thinking about where they post, then everyone wins. I am confident that there is evidence of plenty of people on this site doing more than just posting a bunch of pictures and waiting for the compliments to roll in.

I think this should be a sticky as there are so many posts in General Chit Chat that belong elsewhere. Generally, the readers post excellent questions and receive awesome responses and they get lost so quickly when not posted in the appropriate section.
