For those of your that have not heard the news already Nikon just released the D5000. It is basically a entry level with some nice features such as a swivel out LCD screen, live view, video, in camera retouching, 12.3 MP

Yay! tilt-swivel LCD!!! But boo, no focus motor in the body, and the LCD flips out to the bottom of the camera and not the side---what the---?! Oh, that's gonna be useful if your camera's on a tripod or table and you want to shoot HD video of yourself....what were they smoking when they came up with that one? "Gee, let's save ourselves four inches of wiring and confusing everybody by moving those buttons on the side by rendering the flip-out screen useless!"

Now watch Canon do the same thing . Man, do they even know why we want these features?

Nice camera overall, though, and definitely poised to be the 500D's opposite number. Watch everybody get the names confused.

interesting.. so is this like a D60 replacement?
does anyone know (out of curiosity) which sensor it has.. ?
it would be interesting to see it with the D90/D300 sensor..
that would mean theres an imminent D300 replacement.

OH! i see what you mean now. yeah.. it should be camcorder style.
but that would be crossing too far over the line psychologically.

...it would then become a dslr camcorder, as opposed to a dslr camera, with movie mode

Olympus put a side-flip LCDs on the E-620... whine whine....

Yeah, I know, "useless" is probably a bit harsh. But having the LCD at the bottom of the camera makes it less usable than it could be.

Myself, I'm weird, I want to play with a flip-out screen to see if composing with the image upside-down has any effect (e.g., playing Ansel Adams with a view camera--yes, I've read Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain too many times). Wonder if there's a way to tell the camera to just invert the image on the LCD.

aaaah, i wasnt aware of that.
you're right its a bit silly.

as far as i can tell its got the d90 sensor... which sux knowing noobs have a better sensor in their entry level camera than mine.

but, without the AF motor i still wouldnt buy it.
if a 1000D can have a motor...

i think its nikons way of forcing people to climb the ladder and get a d90

The 1000D doesn't have a motor. Neither does any other Canon DSLR. They went through the whole in lens focus motor thing back in the 80's when they introduced to the EF mount. I'm sure all the Canonites were bitching back then about how Nikon could keep their mount the same for AF lenses so why can't Canon. Oh how things change.
