Identify the subject

I love taking pictures of bugs, animals, wildflowers. My problem becomes identifying them once they are taken.

What are some good resources out there to identifying the stuff that's been taken?

National Geographic makes field guides for different birds and plants and animals etc.

I have a couple books for birds and flowers. My main problem seems to be getting nailed down the family of that type of subject, so I can narrow the species.
