Default do you keep your flash on

your camera at all times when you're shooting?
not necessarily firing, but on your camera?

Not me. That 580 EXII is really heavy, so I only put it on the camera when I need it! I do carry it my camera bag at all times though.

I do not. I only take it out of the case only if I'm going to use it.

Too heavy, plus it flops around too much. I only carry it around when I need it. We have a bag dedicated to flashes and have 3 in there along with misc junk like snoots, wireless remotes and stuff. It'll be 4 flashes after we get my wife the 430EX II. If we need the flash then we'll just grab one and put it in the bag we're going to carry around with us.

Default No me...

I will generally have it in the bag unless I *know* I need it on the camera going into the shoot. If I will be somewhere that I may or may not need it i will keep it in the bag, or if traveling light/hiking attacked to my belt through the belt loop. That was I can pull it out if I need it for some balanced fill or want to gel or snoot it.

I don't take a flash out unless I'm going to use it but I don't take it off for the occasional non-flash shot. I tend not to take a camera bag out that often so have nowhere to put the flash...I usually just take the lens and flash that I intend using attached to the camera and have it all switched with typical exposure setting dialed in ready to go.

If not using flash for a long period it's probably good practice to take it off to reduce the risk of damage to the hotshoe or flash. (although the only time I damaged a hotshoe was in a bike crash where I landed on the camera in my rucksack...I bent it back into shape as best I could but it was never quite the same!)

Quite opposite actually, I try to never put it on the camera at all. Even if I have to hold it in one hand and the camera in another, but with a few clamps and other odds and ends, I usually find a way to mount it or set it where I need.

Default Depends

If I am on a assignment, yes, time is money and to click the flash on when needed is just secondary to shooting.

If I am just shooting scenery outside, then I just leave it in the bag.

I try to look ahead and think if there might be a situation where I might want it, if there is, then it is on for the whole session.

Good shooting

JM
