Default Hello

I stumbled on DPS quite by accident one day, and haven't looked back since.

As a brand new member of the digital photography world, I have found that this site is loaded with excellent tips and techniques that even the newest newbie (a.k.a. - ME) can understand. So thanks for that!

Right now I'm only operating with a Canon Powershot A630, which seems to be enough for me to wrap my head around for now, but I'm sure sometime in the not too distant future an upgrade to DSLR will happen. I'm already envious of the shots you can take....

But for now, my little point and shoot will do. It's got enough features for me to learn to play with before stepping up into the big leagues....

Hey all, found this place by googling a topic on slow shutter speed and I didn't leave, so thought it would be a good idea to sign up! I studied photogrpahy as part of a college course (years ago) and have forgotten most of what I learned.

I picked up a Canon Powershot 3 years ago and just fell in love with photography all over again, however have ordered a Canon eos 400d as a birhtday gift pour moi.

I mainly take photos of my daughter/family/friends/architecture but I would like to learn more and bring my photography to the next level. Hence looking online for topics.

I look forward to learning loads here and getting chatting with others who have a passion for photography.

Hello there
My name is Dawn and I hail from New Jersey, USA (any other Jerseyans out there?)

I found bits of several of the above posters message true to myself as well. I too learned photography basics starting Sr. year of High School (1990s!) and continued my first semester of college thinking of majoring in it.

I've worked with a manual Ricoh film camera (LOVED it!) as well as several cheap film point and shoots, an expensive auto film SLR (which I used so little I regret wasting the money), and currently own a digital P&S. I have a lovely Nikon D80 on layaway and should be picking that up by next week, so I'm VERY excited about opening expaning my photo opportunities again. I too lost many of my skills post manual SLR, and look forward to gleaning insights and frankly just getting out and shooting more often!

I was looking for photography assignments, which brought me to your assignment board. What a neat board and site! I can see that there is a wide spectrum of skill among members, which is both comforting and exciting.

I'm looking forward to participating in the assignments as well as reading and responding to the variety of posts on the forum here!

Thanks for listening!

NJHeart2Heart Dawn

Hi, new member here, was pointed to DPS via Macworld last week and just joined the forum today. Currently a student in Columbus, OH. I'm not majoring in photography, but I am the chief photog for the campus newspaper. I've been shooting a little over a year. My personal body is a D50, but half the time I'm using the school's D200. As far as software and computer goes I'm using Lightroom and CS2 on a G4 Powerbook (Tiger).

I shoot a wide variety of stuff, from sports to street to nature.

I've had entries in two art student shows and I've received an award in each one, hoping to expand and do a few more shows this year. That's everything I can think of for the moment, so I'll just include a few on my favorite shots and a link to the rest! I'm posting all the images at the smallest possible resolution, for the full size simply click the image.

I call him Bartholomew the Caterpillar. This was taken on Labor Day at the Columbus Zoo in Columbus, OH. He is actually not affiliated with the zoo, he was merely on the sidewalk. Drew quite a crowd.

Stephansdom Cathedral in Vienna, Austria. The building across the plaza is completely mirrored and caught the late morning sun just right so that the sky wasn't overexposed and the building wasn't underexposed.

One of my soprano friends during our production of The Mikado, she had the lead female role. I was amazed at the lack of noise, the lighting was terrible for photography (shot at ISO1600).

Sports shot, basketball (obviously). My favorite part about this one is the guy going down with the foot in his face.

Hello! I've been reading the DPS blog for some time and have been really enjoying that but it only occurred to me to look at the forum today and having got sucked in and enjoying a lot of the threads I decided to sign up.

I had a film camera when I was younger but it's only been the last 5 years when I've had a digital camera of some sort and really got in to photography - to the point where it's my primary hobby and is quite consuming!

I started off with an old Canon Ixus V, then moved through an Ixus 400, then a 40 and presently a 55. The reason for using those little cameras was that I went mountain biking a lot and needed a small camera that I could get out and use very quickly so as not to slow down the cycling (with other people). The reason for going through that many cameras was due to breaking them! - although none of them were broken during mountain biking, they were all quite stupid accidents! Another factor for sticking with the Ixus cameras was that they were infrared sensitive, and in 2005 I really started getting in to infrared and that has become an addiction in itself.

This is an early Ixus infrared shot that was at the beginning of my addiction to it...

The Ixus cameras really got me addicted to photography, so I next bought a bridge camera - a Konica Minolta Dimage Z5 which was ok, but a bit disappointing really. So, I decided that because I was taking that many photos and it had become a big part of my life, I'd buy a DSLR and got a Nikon D50. I'm so glad I did that. Since buying that camera I have learned so much and it's just so nice to use a camera that feels nice in your hands and does what you want it to!

After three years of taking infrared shots with the Ixus cameras using long shutter speeds, I finally got a modified camera so that I could take infrared shots hand-held. It's a Fuji Finepix S5600 and this is one of my first nice photos from that...

I find that the best infrared shots work on sunny days when you've got nice looking clouds around. Unfortunately, since I've had the modified camera (less than a few months), it's not been that nice weather here in the UK - so I still think I have yet to get anywhere near the best out of this camera yet.

To finish up, I do from time to time experiment with a couple of film cameras. A Holga 120CFN and a Lomo Supersampler.

I was particularly struck with the Supersampler to the point that I wrote an article about it that was published in issue 10 of JPG magazine.

I've been blogging and using Flickr since 2005 and links to both of those are in my signature if you fancy exploring!

So, hello everybody!

Hi everybody!
FIrst of all I want to aplogize in advance for my english...
My name is Marco, and as you can guess I'm from Italy. I live in Venice (well, not really in Venice... just nearby...) and I'm a web designer.
Surfing the web I found this awesome site and I spent a couple of months reading tips and the forum threads.
I have always been in love with photography cause this is kinda a family passion.
Lately I bought my first camera, a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1 (did I make a good choice?) and now I'm ready to go round and snap some shots!
I really hope that my presence here and your comments and critics will help me to boost my skills!

See you all later!
