My name is Ross DeGroff and I am a novice with photography. We live in Northville, MI, just outside of Ann Arbor. My wife and I recently purchased a Canon Rebel XS that came with a stock 18-55mm lens and a zoom lens (75-300mm - f/4-5.6).

Our son (8) plays football and our daughter (12) competes on a travel cheer team. We were tired of the awful pictures our point and shoot Kodak digital was providing, so we stepped up into an affordable DSLR.

I've experimented with the Canon at our daughter's cheer competition, but got terrible results. I need a lot of help trying to get the proper settings for clear, correctly lit shots. HELP!

Stumbled across this site and want to be a sponge with all the information.

Looking forward to the experience.

Red face Hello DPS Family!

Good Afternoon! I'm Erica. I recently bought on impulse a Nikon D100. I didn't realize that it was the oldest DSLR from Nikon at the time I bought it. But since I have it, I want to make the best of it...even though reading information about it online is really discouraging.

I also have a Nikon D40 and I love it! I use a Nikkor 55-200mm and an 18-135mm with this. But I don't want to travel with it, hence, the reason why I purchased the D100. I'm fairly new to photography. And I mostly take pictures of my 3 year old daughter.

Can anyone tell me what lens is best for the D100?

I appreciate any advice that you can give me with this camera.

Hey, everybody!

Obviously, I'm new here, and pretty new at photography.

I'm a Senior in high school. And I enjoy Photography (of course), Fishing (that makes two hobbies I can't really afford), Classic cars especially old muscle cars (make it three), cooking, reading (especially fiction. I love to read Terry Goodkind and John Marco), listening to music, especially classic rock.

I've always liked taking pictures, but my serious interest started last year when I took a digital photography class at my high school using my mom's Canon Powershot A630.

I took quite a few pictures over the first half of the summer, and then our camera was stolen.

Since then I've been saving up for a new one. After my birthday about a week ago, I finally have enough.

So next week, I'll be going with my uncle (amateur photographer) whose friend owns a camera shop in town. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a good deal on the Canon XSi I want so I'll have some money left over for accessories or another lens (maybe)

I've been looking for a couple days now, but it'll probably be a while before I post some pics though.

I made the progression from film to digital photography about 4 years ago now and have been fascinated by the evolution in cameras since they first appeared. I have a blog at Digital Photography Blog which follows the developments in digital cameras.

My Gear - I use a Canon EOS 20D DSLR and own an assortment of lenses for it. I also have a Fujifilm finepix f30 point and shoot digital camera.

I'm really excited about these forums - while we've previously had a flickr discussion group (which we'll keep running for a while) this forum will allow us to go a lot deeper.

Ok - so now it's your turn. Let us know who you are!

Howdy, y'all! I'm Laurie, a Canadian expat (from all over Western Canada) living in Sri Lanka.

I got my first film camera, a Kodak with 126 film, I believe, back in, oh, 1978 or 1979, which was when photography first bit me. Then I got a job working in a camera store in 1988, both selling cameras and developing film. That was a great experience - I got to play with all the camera equipment, encouraged by the boss so we could become better salespeople, plus working in the lab, I learned a bit about analysing pictures to see what was good and what didn't work for when the customers asked. Huge learning experience.

I bought a Minolta X7A - only camera I could afford as a poor starving university student. I used that camera extensively over the next decade and a half, along with my brother's Canon when he let me borrow it.

When I moved to Sri Lanka in 2003 (to marry my husband), I had to give up the film pictures since film and processing is so relatively very expensive here, so I started using the hubby's digital camera, which, in all honesty, he never touched since because I had so firmly co-opted it. His digital camera was an early Nikon Coolpix, bought a couple of years before I got here.

Three years ago, we bought me another Nikon P&S, a Coolpix S10 with a 10x optical zoom. Lovely little camera that's done well for me. I've shot somewhere around 7500 pics with it in the last three years, and more than half were in the last year. I had major health issues starting a few years before, so I wasn't taking as many photos, but this year has been much better in that regard.

We're looking at getting me a DSLR, and I'm currently leaning towards a Nikon D90, but I still have a lot of research to do before I finalize. I've been at the point of being severely limited by a P&S for a long time.

The hubby things I take some great photos. I think I have a lot to learn. I don't think I have much of an artistic eye - my sister's a true artist, as are several cousins, and they're all amazing. Me, I just putter around and pretend a lot. I'd like to reach the point where I'm not pretending any more.

As for what I photograph...

We live far enough out of the city, Colombo, that we're jungle enough. In our neighborhood, we have purple-faced langurs, monitor lizards, chameleons, wandering cows of every description, and a whole heap of birds of a lot of different colours. Then there are the insects, also many and varied, and the flowers and plants. I photograph all of it. Madly. I've got an obscene number of photos of just cows. And the rose-ringed parakeets, and the purple-faced langurs, and the lizards. No, I just have an obscene number of photos.

Anyway, enough of the rambling...

Hello!

I'm Danielle and I live in Fredericksburg, VA, USA. I love to travel and take photographs with my Nikon D300 and a recently Infrared Converted Nikon D200.

I've been lurking around DPS for a year or so and have enjoyed the articles and forums. I hope to join in some of the discussions and continue to learn from this great site.

Thank you,

Hey guys.

I'm a student in Australia also work part time as an ESL teacher. I quite enjoy photograhpy, I've been shooting with a Sony Cybershot for the last year or so, I take it everywhere just in case I see something I wanna shoot. Lately I bought a Nikon D5000, I'm happy with it and I like having more control over what I can do rather than "tricking" my Camera to behave in a certain way. Althought, playing with camera settings has been fun for me .

Anyway, I've come to this site to learn, get some feedback, and offer my own. Hope to get to know you all, so, hey!

JieSye.

Hi all,

I'm originally from Malaysia, but right now am situated in California in the States - as a student. I got my first camera in 2004 (Sony Cybershot DSC-W1), and I've been hooked ever since.

I absolutely adore macro and flower photography, and my dream job would be to shoot for some kind of nature/flower magazine. I also shoot headshots and portraits, as well as the occassional Wedding/E-Session.

Currently I shoot with a Canon 40D, a Sigma 30mm f/1.4, and a 580EX II Speedlite. I've owned more glass before, but had to let them go due to financial constraints. I hope to acquire a wider range of glass once again, and possibly invest in a 5D/5DII or 7D sometime.

Hope to contribute feedback to the community, as well as receive critique on my work!

Daros
