Default cf going and sd coming in for SLRs

Hey, I know the new Canon Xti (450d) uses SD and CF cards. Do you think that Cf cards are on the way out for SLRs (they already are extinct with P&S) and SD cards will replace them?

The XTi still uses CF cards. It's the XSi that uses the SD cards. I'm not sure if the CF cards will go the way of the dinosaur. A lot of people have invested a bit of cash in CF cards so I don't see them going away any time soon. Maybe in 5 years you'll see a decline in their use but by then I'm hoping to have a new camera too.

I think you see the SD format appearing in the entry level DSLR's to make it easier for people coming from a point and shoot model. They are also smaller than a CF card which makes them easier to fit into the compact bodies of the entry level models.

I don't think you'll see CF cards die in the higher end bodies for a while, though. A lot of pros/higher level amateurs prefer CF cards for their size (yes larger size) and durability.

my entry level xti is CF - I wish it would have been SD b/c I have a bunch of those - now I have both, I just do not want them to come out with another format - whatever that may be ...

I don't think so I think the high end SLRs will still use CF (since it's theoretically slightly faster then SD cards) but we will probably see a transition away from CF in the lower end SLR lineup and certainly in the Point and Shoot. What I hope happens over the next 10 years is transitioning away from cards period and using internal Flash Memory or hard drives inside cameras on higher end models. With the option of having a slot for a card as well if your super paranoia about losing pictures incase of a failure.

Personally I'm sick of paying so much money for 2GB of storage when I can pay double that and get 100GB hd and be done with ever needing another memory card.

Oh god I hope not. Not being able to buy whatever amount of memory I want would be terrible. Say, for example, that 2GB is more than enough for me, so that's all I want to spend. But, a sports photographer using the same camera could need 5+GB. Plus, that doesn't allow for the "use multiple cards" concept. Sure, I could still buy cards, but now that's adding to the expense of the memory that's already in there.

That's not to mention all the hassle there is involved with internal memory. If you've ever worked in a photo lab, you'd realize how much of a PITA it can be.

Internal memory already existed in low-end P&S in the early days. I was very happy to see it phased out, and would hate to ever see it come back again. It'd be a step backwards IMO.

As for buying a 100GB HD as opposed to a 2GB memory card. Well, HDs have moving parts and are subject to much higer wear and tear than non-volatile solid-state memory. Some companies are even experimenting with flash memory to be used in place of hard drives for the future of computing. If you really want that, though, look around for some microdrives.

I popped my 8 year old Ixus out of the cupboard yesterday (the battery still had charge!!!) it takes CF... My Ixus 45 and 960 both take SD... The 30D is right into its CF cards.. The only thing that really annoys me is that ALL the Ixus' take different batteries and different chargers... DOH!...

Long Live CF...

Plus, SD is really only designed to go up to a certain size (4 gigs I think, but don't quote me on that) and going any bigger goes beyond what the thing is supposed to be able to handle.

That's just what I remember reading somewhere, can't remember where or when.

Sorry guy-they have 16GB SD cards now. You can buy 8GB cards at Wal-Mart.
