I've found that I switch-hit depending on which camera I use. On my old school 35mm film camera I'm an upper, but with my compact little digital I'm a downer.

This whole "upper" and "downer" thing is weirding me out a bit, not gonna lie. All I can think of is vs.

Yep, I'm the newbie here. You don't haze the new kids in this forum, do you?

the "UPPER" comes from the old days i believe.. when binding folders the page must always be readable from the right.

We'll take it easy on ya! You're from South Dakota, for cryin' out loud!! You've probably have had a rough life up to this point. Why make it any worse. You guys got indoor toilets yet?

Sorry! You walked into it. Welcome to DPS

Default Upper - mostly

Most of the time I shoot upper. Not sure if being left handed is the reason for this. When shooting some sports shots [grandkids] I will use the downer position and my right eye. This helps me see when more of the action. I miss those old sports frame viewers on a 4x5 press camera.

I seem to be in the minority here, but I'm a downer too. Strange... and I'm right-handed too so I don't know why I feel more comfortable holding the camera that way.

I'm getting a kick out of this whole upper/ downer thing. Makes it sound like we're doing a bad thing... lol.

Downer. Read somewhere that you hold the camera steadier, and it's more natural for me.

Upper.

Actually, when I first saw the pictures, I was about to vote downer, but I went to grab my camera just to check which way I automatically held it- shutter on top- I might take the odd one with the shutter on the bottom, but I feel I just have more control with the shutter on top. Never actually hold my camera like the man in the photos though- tend to be a two-hander.
