I'm an upper myself, but I can see some advantages to being a lower. When you have your arm up in air, as you do when you are an upper, there is more chance of camera shake. Using the lower method, you tuck your elbow into your chest & hold it steadier.

You know, I was going to just include this as a hot thread this weekend, but I think it'll make a great weekly poll... so I've co-opted your question for this week's poll.

Note: I still have to look at which way I do this.

I honestly couldn't figure out the answer to this one until I got the camera out. Doh! I'm a downer. Which is funny because when I flip the camera 90deg on the tripod it puts the button on top, and that way I can always tell for sure whether I used a tripod or not when I go back through photos later. LOL!

I voted "downer" b/c I think that's what I do in most circumstances - but I'm definitely a bit of a switch-hitter on this one. It depends on how steady I need the camera to be (as Digidave noted). I think "upper" gives me more freedom and flexibility for composition, but "downer" makes it more steady.

interesting question. I have been observing various stats on my photography for the purpose of lens acquisition. This is a frivolous stat, but I am about 50/50 - whatever suits me at the time. apparently.

I'm an "Upper"....I'm usually in a good mood.
I also hold the camera from the top for "portrait" view. I think it's because I'm "right eye dominant" and it keeps my nose off of the back the camera.

I'm a downer, because my gorrillapod is usually attached and held with my left hand. When it's not attached, I still support the camera the same way.

Battery grip for me, but before that I was an upper (and once in a while, if I'm in a hurry, forget I have a second shutter button and shoot upper anyway).

Default Downer!

I guess it's because I'm a lefty and it's much more natural for me to shoot with the buttons below. It feels much steadier as well, but sometimes I do switch to being an upper to switch my flash's bounce direction (towards the wall) quickly.

All three, up, down, grip. I just do whatever works best/fastest at the time.
