You do have noise reduction on your XT According to a thread elsewhere:

the feature kicks in at different shutter speeds depending on your ISO setting. According to the manual, on ISO 1600 it's on exposures 1" or more, less than that (ISO 800 - 100), it does wait until the 30" mark (p. 148).
So it may or may not have been the cause depending on how long your exposure was. Otherwise, I'll go with what Seltzer said

Seltzer... the 2nd one does look like the quake logo!

Any recommendations on lenses for fireworks?

I'd say the lens depends on the distance you have. As with nic's shots she was a distance away so it could have gone either way. For my shots this last weekend I used the full range on my 28-135mm between zooming in to catch the small explosions and other lighting effects, to zooming out (and needing more at times) to get the bigger bursts.
As you can tell, I also didn't crop my images. So while I could have just stayed zoomed out a bit the whole time I think I would have missed a few things even if I did crop down.
Lens speed didn't matter so much for me as I was using bulb mode the whole time so it was just a shutter release.

Well, if you like photoshop/gimp, you could try out this tutorial. Just make sure you get at least one great background, and several good explosions.

Good luck, looking forward to seeing your pictures!

jillmarie, Welcome

That's a very helpful article, given the number of people who use a less complicated camera much of the time when out with friends and family. Thanks for linking us up.

I would love to try my hand at some fireworks, is there a way to get these shots without a remote shutter release? Can I use the self timer? By using the self timer, I won't be able to take multiple bursts right? If I can use the self timer, should I use the 2 sec or 10 sec? I think the 2 sec sounds more logical... but would like to hear your opinions. Thanks for your help in advance!
