Default School Final.

Hello,
I'm new to photography and I just got a Canon Rebel T3 and am currently enrolled in an Intro to digital photography class. We receieved our final already so we have the semester to work on it. I was hoping you guys can give me some tips and tricks as to how to get the shots I want. I see the shots in my head but seeing as though we're only in the beginning of the class im not sure what has to be done to get the shots.

I chose Inspiration for my project, that is, taking pictures of people doing things that inspire them. Painting, reading, music etc.

The first shot I want to take will include someone reading a book, it will be a darker shot but i want to put a light source in the book so the face of the reader is crisp and lit up but maybe seem like they are under the blanket late at night reading.

Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

If you work in Photoshop you can go to Filter>Render>Lighting Effects where you can selectively add light via a spot or omni effect, and also change the direction, intensity and the color of the light

I know someone who used a small laptop concealed by a large book so the glow of the screen hit the person's face, or maybe a small flash on low power.

I had tried this before, but unfortunately since I'm still in the first few classes of my Intro course I'm still not familiar with all the settings.
I used the flashlight app on my phone to light my wifes face with the book but none of the pictures came out the way I wanted. Does anyone have any suggestions for settings?

Default Light Source

I just did this with my friends daughter. Using a 7D body and 24-70 2.8 lens on 2.8 1/50th of a sec. Would've had better results with a tripod. I used a flashlight app from my iphone and a kleenex as a defuser on it. Worked great. HTH. When I get it uploaded I will post a link.
