I wonder if cost and size have anything to do with it?
 I just read an article about this and why the 30x zooms don't exist for DSLR cameras. Where's my 30x zoom SLR lens? | Pixiq

Actually, it's for the convenience of the Borrowers. Their image display devices can't handle the files from bigger sensors. Plus the deep DoF more nearly matches the view they have with their very short focal length eyes.
