Question please help! sharpening issue in cs5

hi guys i don't know whats happened in my photoshop but when i go to sharpen an image the little preview box is just white and no matter how far i pull the sliders along nothing happens.i then have to save the image as a jpeg then open it in raw so i can apply the shapening there. i'm sure it's just some setting i don't know about but it's driving me nuts!!! being a newbie i have done a lot of fiddling with diffrent settings lol.
any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Try Control J (for PC) to open a new layer, go to Sharpen and chose Unsharpen, adjust accordingly then go to layers and flatten image. Or sharpen if needed in camera raw - depending on further processing in CS5.You can also use the high pass filter for sharpening. Lots of video tutorials on Adobe and Google.
